MTN Helps with the Expansion of Mobile Money to Rural Zambia

MTN Fintech Team visited rural Zambia in an effort to help with the penetration of Mobile Money in the area.

On Thursday 18th November, the MTN Fintech team led by Fintech Managing Director, Komba Malukutila visited the Zambian village of Chitandika, located in the East of Zambia. The remote village has a population of approximately 4000 and is thriving with great agricultural activity.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the penetration of Mobile Money in the area in order to establish what actions needed to be taken, to ensure the people of Chitandika have full knowledge and access to Mobile Money.

The team was warmly welcomed by representatives of the community who confirmed their strong understanding of MTN Mobile Money. This has been greatly attributed to the introduction of the Engie Solar Power Plant which now provides electricity to over 380 households which were previously deprived access to electricity. Mobile Money has played a key role in the great empowerment story as the platform has enabled individuals in the area with a simple and reliable platform through the USSD short code that allows them to pay for the solar service and gain access to electricity.

Off-grid renewable energy solutions really improves electricity access and the quality of life for Zambians in the most remote areas. MTN Mobile money is committed to increasing its support to the people of Chitandika and many more remote areas across the country in partnership with Engie. We are leaving no one behind, Everybody deserves the benefits of a modern connected life.
