Ethio Telecom has officially launched a nationwide initiative to switch from copper to fiber network technology, marking a pivotal moment in Ethiopia’s telecom infrastructure. This shift is set to significantly enhance the speed, quality, and reliability of broadband services across the country. The first phase of the project targets the migration of 31,000 customers in Addis Ababa from the copper network to fiber, with an overall goal of transitioning 100,000 customers nationwide. This initiative is part of Ethio Telecom’s broader strategy to meet the rapidly growing demand for digital services by upgrading to a fiber network capable of supporting high-capacity broadband services.
The company has invested heavily in the deployment of this advanced fiber infrastructure, which will provide customers with improved internet speeds and future-proof technology that can be easily upgraded from 1GB to 50GB, all at no additional cost to users. The new fiber network will also offer superior quality in terms of reliability and efficiency, with ultra-low latency, making it ideal for critical services such as cloud computing, IoT, AI, smart homes, and digital health.
In addition to boosting productivity and reducing network failures, the fiber network will help reduce environmental impact, conserve energy, and prevent network damage and theft issues that plague copper-based infrastructure. The copper-to-fiber migration will unfold over the next three years in Addis Ababa and within five years in major regional cities, eventually covering all urban centers and districts.
Through this ambitious project, Ethio Telecom aims to build a robust, future-ready network that will drive the digital transformation of Ethiopia, empowering individuals, businesses, and institutions to benefit from cutting-edge digital solutions that meet the demands of today’s fast-paced technological environment. Ethio Telecom calls on its fixed-line customers to support the initiative and embrace this transition to high-quality broadband services.
