The Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN) has successfully connected free WiFi through eduroam at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport and East Park Mall in Lusaka, enhancing internet access for the public, including traveling researchers, students, and small businesses. This initiative aims to improve connectivity at key public spaces, allowing tourists, investors, and frequent travelers to communicate upon arrival. ZAMREN Chief Executive Officer Stein Mkandawire emphasized that this service is available at no cost, benefiting users for both business and personal communication.
During a media breakfast in Lusaka, Mr. Mkandawire highlighted ZAMREN’s ongoing efforts to extend free internet to public institutions like colleges and nursing schools, enabling students to conduct research and complete academic tasks with ease. He called on the corporate sector to collaborate with ZAMREN in expanding internet services across Zambia.
So far, ZAMREN has connected 13 public colleges, providing students with crucial access to educational resources. ZAMREN Board Chairman, Professor Mundia Muya, echoed these sentiments, stating that internet access is vital for academic success. He urged more partners to support this initiative and expand internet coverage to a broader audience.
Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, praised ZAMREN for connecting colleges nationwide. The Minister shared his experience from a recent visit to one of the colleges, where students expressed satisfaction with the internet speed and bandwidth, allowing them to access online research materials easily. Mr. Mutati encouraged other stakeholders to collaborate with ZAMREN to provide internet to even more educational institutions nationwide.
