In alignment with the 8 Presidential Priorities and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have formalized a collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance data privacy and protection education for Nigerian youth.
During the signing ceremony, Hon. Minister of State for Youth Development, Engr. Ayodele Olawande, highlighted the administration’s focus on youth development, noting that 80% of human capital initiatives are aimed at young Nigerians. The partnership aims to equip 5,000 youths with essential technical skills for emerging roles within the data protection sector. Engr. Olawande expressed confidence that this initiative will foster job creation and wealth generation in alignment with the government’s strategic goals.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, underscored the significance of data protection in attracting foreign investment. He stressed that demonstrating accountability in handling data assets will build investor trust. With an estimated 500,000 data controllers in Nigeria, the demand for data protection officers presents a significant employment opportunity. Dr. Olatunji also assured that the certification process will be economically viable, with an in-country certification body established to issue globally recognized certificates.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, praised the NDPC for its dedication to data privacy and pledged the Ministry’s full support in ensuring the success of this collaboration. This partnership represents a crucial step in strengthening Nigeria’s data protection framework while creating valuable career opportunities for its youth.
