The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies has raised urgent concerns over the financial stability of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Chairperson Khusela Sangoni Diko warned that the broadcaster is facing a potential existential crisis if its funding issues remain unresolved. According to Diko, the SABC’s ability to fulfill its public service mandate is being compromised by its lack of adequate resources.
The committee has advocated for increased public funding to support the SABC in its efforts to deliver on its legislative obligations. The broadcaster is tasked with providing diverse and inclusive content that serves the public interest, but the current financial strain could severely limit its capacity to meet these expectations. The call for additional government support reflects the committee’s commitment to ensuring that the SABC continues to play its critical role in the media landscape and in promoting public access to information across South Africa.
