MTN Ghana has kicked off its 2023 MoMo Season in Accra, focusing on overcoming barriers to digital payment adoption in the country. Running throughout August and September, this season aims to raise awareness about the opportunities provided by MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) in the digital economy and to recognize partners and customers.
The event underlines the significance of the MTN mobile money service for Ghana’s economy, extending its accessibility to more citizens, and celebrating its over 11 million subscribers. Shaibu Haruna, CEO of Mobile Money Limited, emphasized the positive impact of MoMo, which has offered financial services to both banked and unbanked individuals, generating job opportunities since its inception in 2009.
Haruna highlighted the substantial growth in mobile money transactions. In 2022, transactions surged to GH¢1.07 trillion, despite the introduction of the e-levy, compared to GH¢902.5 billion in 2021, as per the Bank of Ghana’s 2022 Summary of Economic and Financial Data.
The MoMo Season festivities include various activities across the country, with launch events in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Nkawkaw, and Tamale. Consumer and staff promos, market campaigns, stakeholder discussions, and education about MoMo fraud are also planned. The Mobile Money Limited aims to pave the way for a digitized future by tackling barriers to digital payment adoption, contributing to the revitalization of Ghana’s economy.
