The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) collaborates with Huawei, Intel, ITU, and GSMA for the 3rd ATU Africa Innovation Challenge. Aimed at universities and higher learning institutions across Africa, the competition focuses on fostering digital inclusion and solutions to bridge the continent’s digital divide.
With a total prize fund of $50,000, the challenge encourages institutions to submit established practices that support young innovators. The theme, “Innovating for Digital Inclusion,” seeks solutions for affordable connectivity, digital literacy, access to information and services, and inclusive digital solutions for marginalized groups.
ATU Secretary General John Omo emphasized the importance of partnership against digital divide challenges. Dr. Bienvenu Soglo from Intel highlighted the need for collective efforts in fostering African-specific solutions. Burundi’s Minister of ICT and Media, Léocadie Ndacayisaba, urged collaboration between governments and the private sector.
Huawei’s Vice President for Public Affairs, Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr. Wan Wei, affirmed their commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure and skills development.
The challenge’s culmination is set for October, with plans for a physical awards ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda. The competition aims to inspire innovation and promote digital equity across the continent.
