In line with recent guidelines from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), telecommunications operators in Nigeria have taken a significant step by implementing age restrictions for mobile subscribers. According to MTN’s half-year 2023 report, the company began this process in Q2 by adjusting the minimum age requirement for SIM registration from 16 to 18 years. Two other mobile operators have also confirmed their adherence to this policy, leading to the disconnection of some mobile lines registered by individuals under the age of 18.
The move aims to protect minors and align mobile subscriptions with the Nigerian constitution, which recognizes 18 as the legal age for entering contractual relationships. The NCC underlines that SIM acquisition is essentially a contract, requiring subscribers to have the legal status, maturity, and rationality necessary to bear certain contractual responsibilities, obligations, and liabilities. This shift represents a proactive effort by telecom operators and regulators to safeguard young users and promote responsible mobile usage in the country.
