Huawei and the East African Communication Organisation (EACO) have formed a strategic partnership aimed at driving digital transformation in the region. The two entities recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to accelerate digital adoption through skills development.
The MoU, signed by Dr Ally Simba of EACO and Yang Hongjie of Huawei Southern Africa Region, outlines their collaborative efforts to enhance ICT capacity among EACO staff and members. Areas of focus include 5G technology, cyber security, data protection, privacy, and spectrum management.
This collaboration comes after Huawei’s earlier announcement in April, revealing its plan to invest a substantial $3.4 trillion in global digital transformation. Huawei’s Vice Chair and CFO, Meng Wanzhou, highlighted the world’s growing embrace of digitalization during Huawei’s 20th Global Analyst Conference.
Dr Simba expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing its significance in capacity building and training for EACO members. He praised Huawei’s commitment to connecting the unconnected and fostering digital economy participation for economic and job growth in Africa.
Dr Samuel Muhizi, Director General of Agence de Régulation et de Contrôle des Telecommunications, welcomed the MoU announcement, foreseeing benefits for all EACO member states. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and connectivity in the era of rapid technological advancements.
Patrick Baganizi, Director General at the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority and EACO Chairman, expressed gratitude for Huawei’s ongoing support and urged their assistance in achieving their shared goals.
Both Huawei and EACO recognize digital transformation as a critical catalyst for economic growth, social development, and regional integration. Through this partnership, they aim to bridge the digital divide and pave the way for a digitally inclusive future across East Africa.
