Cell C Successfully Transitions to vRAN Model, Expanding its Network Reach

Cell C has completed the transition to a virtual radio access network model ahead of its schedule.

Cell C, a prominent South African operator, has successfully completed its transition to a virtual radio access network (vRAN) model ahead of schedule.
In this strategic move, Cell C decommissioned its own tower infrastructure and entrusted network building and operation responsibilities to MTN, another major operator in South Africa.

MTN will provide Cell C with access to a virtual radio access network tailored for Cell C’s prepaid and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) subscribers. This transition allows Cell C to streamline operations and benefit from MTN’s network management expertise. Cell C’s network reach has significantly expanded, now encompassing approximately 14,000 towers across the country, nearly tripling its coverage within three years.

Over 12,000 of these sites are equipped with 4G/LTE capabilities. It’s important to note that Cell C retains control over the customer experience while utilizing its own spectrum. This transition to a vRAN model positions Cell C for improved efficiency and continued growth, supported by MTN’s network infrastructure and expertise in the dynamic South African telecommunications market.
