Netflix forced to reduce streaming bitrate in Africa during the Covid19 crisis

The streaming service aims to reduce the use of bandwidth by 25% until the end of April.

With people working from home and schools closed the networks experience a much higher load. In an attempt reduce pressure on network infrastructure, Netflix reduces the streaming bitrate of its service. Similar measures have been made in other regions in the world.

Given the crisis, we’ve developed a way to reduce Netflix’s traffic on telecommunications networks by 25% while also maintaining the quality of our service.

According to Florance, Consumers should continue to get the quality that comes with their plan — whether it’s ultra high definition, high definition or standard definition.
